Begin your break with a trip to Crete - with lots of exciting things to see and do! The birthplace of Europe’s first advanced civilisation, the Minoans, Crete is dotted with ancient ruins dating back over 4000 years. The Palace of Knossos is one such ruin and is a must-see for any visitor to Crete. Branded Europe’s oldest city, the palace was the heart of the Minoan culture and dates back to roughly 1380 BC! You could also check out the Arkadi Monastery - a fascinating historical site that offers a glimpse into the island’s storied past. Or, visit the Gorge of Mili, a peaceful place for a walk with some interesting things to explore, including an abandoned village and a church built into the stone! Check out Damoni Beach to get your sun, sea and sand fix, or visit The Venetian Fortezza, a beautiful fortress offering some great views from the top - the ideal place for a picnic and a stroll in the sunshine.
After you’ve checked out the charms of Crete, you’ll be heading to ancient Athens and since many of Athens’ attractions can be found atop its hills or tucked away down its side streets – you’ll want to break out your most comfortable shoes and get ready to explore on foot! Architectural gems are in good supply within the ancient city. The towering Acropolis, arguably the most significant ancient citadel in the Western world, is a must for any visitor. Filled with important temples like the Parthenon, no expense was spared in the acropolis’ construction over 2000 years ago – no wonder it still watches over Athens to this day. Walk in the footsteps of great philosophers like Socrates with a visit to the Agora, or head to Monastiraki Flea Market for a taste of modern Athenian life. For a splash of green, head to the National Gardens and soak up the peaceful ambience away from the hustle and bustle. If the call of the beach proves too strong, all you have to do is travel 10 miles south of the capital for the unspoilt sandy beaches, glistening mineral lakes and majestic mountains of the Athens Riviera.
